Back to the SwarbStore: Other Back-Catalogue Back to Atrax Records
After Swarb was taken ill in Spring 1999, and his obituary was (erroneously!) published in the Daily Telegraph, Dave and Chris Pegg of Woodworm Records kindly sprung into action and launched SwarbAid. The appeal included a fund-raising concert at Birmingham's Symphony Hall in July 1999, and also this limited-edition EP recorded at the same venue in March of that year. Swarb joins Fairport, and guests Anna Ryder and PJ Wright, for two classic Fairport Convention numbers, Swarb's self-penned instrumental 'My Heart's In New South Wales' and an inspired cover of Bob Dylan's 'When I Paint My Masterpiece'.
Only a limited number of copies were produced, and now this CD is exclusively available from us.

DAVE SWARBRICK WITH FAIRPORT CONVENTION - SWARBAID - WOODWORM WRCDO32
Recorded at Birmingham Symphony Hall on last Winter’s tour this 23 minute EP contains the four songs for which Swarb joined the band. Rapturous applause greeted him, before he led the band into “Bonny Black Hare”, fiddle bouncing along, all having a good time from the off. It’s an old favourite, but a new arrangement, Ric on second fiddle, Chris mandolin, Gerry Simon and Peggy as you’d expect. Second, a new tune, “My Heart’s In New South Wales”, written about his time living there. A beautiful slow tune, guitar and fiddle to start, with the sound filling out as the tune progresses, bass, percussion, and later Ric and Chris on fiddle, and PJ Wright on pedal steel. The track is due to appear on the Cofa album, whenever that gets released, but this was a one off arrangement. “Rosie” follows, Gerry playing the song he first recorded with Fairport, PJ staying on pedal steel guitar, for what is an all time favourite for many. Anna Ryder joined the big band on accordion for Swarb’s final piece for the night, “When I Paint My Masterpiece”. A rousing piece with Chris on mandolin, PJ playing dobro, Gerry and Peggy driving it all along, Swarb’s fiddle and lead vocal out front, and backing from Peggy, Simon and Chris, and a hall full of happy people.

AMG EXPERT REVIEW:
It's always a treat when fiddler Dave Swarbrick "rosins up the bow" with his old pals in Fairport Convention. The concert and CD proceeds were directly earmarked to benefit an ailing Swarbrick but you’d never guess that he was in questionable health based on this recording. Members of Fairport's 1999 line-up join Swarbrick on stage for "The Bonny Black Hare" (first recorded by Fairport and Swarb on 1971’s Angel Delight) and two of the fiddler’s original pieces, "My Heart’s in New South Wales" and the ever-popular "Rosie". Culminating this EP is Bob Dylan’s "When I Paint My Masterpiece."
