While living in Australia in the mid-nineties, Swarb teamed up with Aussie/Glaswegian singer-songwriter Alistair Hulett. They proved to be an inspired pairing and have continued to work with each other ever since. This is their debut album.

"An inspired pairing indeed" Dirty Linen

"Fine singing by Alistair with Dave's fiddle giving the songs a lilt and a lift to the spirits" Living Tradition

"I don't think I've ever been so impressed on the first play of an album" Folk Buzz

ALISTAIR HULETT & DAVE SWARBRICK - SATURDAY JOHNNY & JIMMY THE RAT - RED RATTLER RATCDOO3

Eleven songs, either traditional or with a traditional delivery, Swarb’s fiddle being the centre of attention for much of the album, being the constant in the minimal instrumentation. Hulett’s voice commands the attention, with each story or situation unfolding as you listen.

Trying to separate the traditional material from that written by Alistair Hulett is in the main somewhat difficult such is the style of writing. Personal favourite is one of those self-penned songs, “A Migrant’s Lullaby”, slightly more solid than most of the material, and at track seven the first of the more up-tempo numbers on the album. It’s been a long time since a new Swarbrick album, and with the absence of some fast, and even slow, fiddle tunes it’s not what I expected when I heard that it was on the way, but it is a duo album not a solo release. This is currently only released in Australia, though imports should be fairly easy to find in the specialist shops and mail order dealers.
