| A recent release from Atrax is the long-awaited CD reissue of Whippersnapper's 1989, cassette-only live collection, 'These Foolish Strings'. Unavailable for several years, this CD shows a side of the band familiar to their live audience, but which isn't shown on their studio work. Opening with Dave Swarbrick's music-hall ditty 'Foolish', the album also includes an early arrangement of Chris Leslie's 'John Gaudie' (now a favourite in the Fairport Convention repertoire), a comic version of 'The Hen's March/Four Poster Bed' (complete with belches), an epic 12 minute fidde medley, and climaxes with a beautiful pairing of Swarbrick's 'Rosie' and Pachelbel's 'Canon in D'. An essential release for fans of Whippersnapper's live and recorded work and a great introduction for those unfamiliar with this much-missed branch of the Fairport family tree. |
